What is a “bug,” biologically speaking? |
The biological meaning of the word “bug” is significantly more restrictive than in common usage. People often refer to all insects as “bugs,” even using the word to include such organisms as bacteria and viruses as well as glitches in computer programs. In the strictest biological sense, a “bug” is a member of the order Hemiptera, also called true bugs. Members of Hemiptera include bedbugs, squash bugs, clinch bugs, stink bugs, and water striders.
