Roosevelt did not have a vice president for the years after McKinley’s assassination. However, his vice president for his full term was Charles W. Fairbanks, a U.S. senator from Indiana. Fairbanks later sought the Republican nomination for president in 1916, but did not succeed. However, he was chosen to be the running mate of Charles Evans Hughes, the Republican presidential candidate that year. Hughes and Fairbanks lost that election to Woodrow Wilson and Thomas Marshall.
