What was Buchanan’s next political position?

After serving as minister to Russia, Buchanan was elected to the United States Senate in 1834 as a member of the Democratic Party, winning over Joel B. Sutherland, James Clarke, and Amos Ellmaker. He served three terms in the Senate, winning reelection in 1837 and 1843. In 1837, he served as chairman of the Senate’s Foreign Relations Committee.
