What did Buchanan do when the U.S. became embroiled in the War of 1812?

Though he opposed the war, Buchanan volunteered to serve his country under Judge Henry Shippen. He marched with his unit to Baltimore to serve under Major Charles S. Ridgely of the Third Cavalry.
