Buchanan made his first run for president in the election of 1844 but he did not obtain the nomination of the Democratic Party; it fell instead to dark horse candidate James K. Polk. Buchanan did become Polk’s secretary of state. But it was a tough position for Buchanan, as Polk would carry out the responsibilities of the job when he and Buchanan disagreed openly on political matters, something that happened quite often.
