What were uses of the Leyden jar?

In the late eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, people attempted to use the Leyden jar in a variety of ways. Some felt that it could cure medical ailments, and many doctors used the jar as primitive electroshock therapy. Others used it as a demonstration device and for entertainment purposes. Still more people felt that it could be used in cooking. Try cooking a turkey with an electrical spark!
