Another term for a supporting force is “normal force.” The normal force is always directed perpendicularly out of the surface. The normal force of a chair is straight up if the chair is on a level surface, while the normal force of an incline would be perpendicular to the surface of the incline, and not perfectly vertical. The term “normal” was derived from the geometrical name for a 90° angle and is not the opposite of “abnormal.”
