Impedance

What is impedance matching?

Impedance is the opposition to wave motion exerted by a medium. When a wave travels from one medium into another, the impedance changes, causing some of the energy of the wave to be reflected back into the original medium. Therefore not all of the wave’s energy travels into the new medium. An impedance matching device between the two media allows for a smooth transition in impedance and reduces reflections.
