How are gears used today?

In addition to automobiles and clocks, gears are used in washing machines, electric mixers and can openers, and electric drills, as well as hard drives and CD/DVD drives in computers. Today much of the development of gears is associated with improvements in the materials used. New metal alloys increase the lifetime of gears used in automobiles and industries. Consumer electronics uses plastic gears that require no lubricant and are quiet.
