Why are animals so prominent in African myths?

The centrality of animals in African mythology and in other animistic mythologies, such as those of the Native North American, reflects the sense that all things in nature are animated by the spirit world. In an earlier time, according to this perspective, animals and humans were much more involved in each other’s lives than they are now and could communicate directly.
