Classical Greek Mythology

The Greek Pantheon and the Olympians

Who was Hestia?

Hestia was a quiet, older sister of Zeus, Hera, Poseidon, Hades, and Demeter. A virgin, she was responsible for the hearth, that is, for domestic life and order. Unlike her siblings, she was nonviolent and passive, perhaps a model for a patriarchal society’s ideal woman.

Poseidon (Neptune) is a popular subject for fountains across Europe, such as the Driemond fountain in Frank-endaal, the Netherlands.
