Who was Hermes?

Hermes was a popular god among the Greeks. He was the messenger of the gods and the escort of souls to the Underworld. Hermes carried a magic wand, the caduceus, and wore sandals with wings. He was responsible for travelers and for business transactions. He was also a trickster who was fond of lies and deceptions. On the day of his birth he stole the cattle of Apollo.
