The Japanese

Who are the Japanese people?

There has been much scholarly discussion and disagreement about the origins of the homogeneous people who make up the current population of the Japanese islands. The dominant theory is that indigenous Jomon people—today’s Ainu—lived in Japan for thousands of years before they were joined by Yayoi people between 400 and 300 B.C.E., combining with them to form the present day Japanese.
