What is the Nihon shoki? |
The Nihon shoki (The Chronicles of Japan), or Nihongi, is the second of the great collections of Japanese mythology commissioned by the Empress Gemmei. It was compiled by Prince Toneri with the help of Ono Yasumaro in classical Chinese and was completed in 720 C.E.
While not scriptural equivalents of the Bible, the Qur’an, or the Vedas, in that they do not pretend to be in any sense the word of the divine, the Kojiki and the Nihon shoki serve as the primary sources for our knowledge of the Shinto perspective.
