What happened to Odysseus after the events of the Odyssey?

Many stories were commonly told about Odysseus after his return to Ithaca. One story held that, to regain the favor of the offended Poseidon, he traveled inland with a Poseidian trident until the trident was no longer recognized. In this way Odysseus became a de facto missionary of the great sea god who had caused him so much pain.
