Mesoamerican and South American Mythologies: Maya, Aztec, Inca

Introduction

What do we mean by Mesoamerican and South American mythologies?

Mesoamerican mythologies are those of the indigenous peoples of Mexico and Central America. These mythologies include, most importantly, those of the Mayans and the Mexica (Aztec). The mythology of the Mexica developed directly from those of a series of earlier civilizations, including the Olmec and Toltec and the peoples of Monte Alban (Zapotec) and Teotihuacan.

South America is a continent of many peoples, but the dominant mythology that has come down to us is that of the Inca of Peru, with which much of the rest of South American mythology has much in common.
