How does meiosis relate to Mendel’s laws? |
Mendel’s law of segregation directly refers to meiosis. He had suggested that gametes contain “characters” that control specific traits, and these characters separate when gametes form. Gametes are formed by meiosis, in which the chromosome number is reduced by one half (from diploid to haploid). (For more about diploid, haploid, and meiosis, see the chapter “Cellular Basics.”)
