What is torpor?

Torpor is a short-term decrease in body temperature and metabolic rate. Animals such as hummingbirds and bats go through daily periods of torpor that allow them to reduce their energy requirements at night or when hunting is poor. Torpor can be considered as a type of brief sleep, but it is distinct from a state of hibernation.
