Estivation (from the Latin term aestas, meaning “summer”) is a process by which animals become dormant during the summer rather than the winter. Estivation may be used as a survival strategy against intense heat (ground squirrels), drought (snails), or both. The Columbian ground squirrel both hibernates and estivates, beginning its dormant period in the late summer and continuing it until the next May.
