What are guard cells in plants?

The guard cells in all plants have the same function: they regulate the exchange of gases and water by opening and closing the stomata pores. However, structurally they are different from dicot and monocot plants: Guard cells in dicots are kidney-shaped, while those in monocots are shaped like dumbbells.
