Two basic types of cells are in the nervous system: neurons that carry messages and the support cells that both feed and protect them. In the central nervous system—comprised of the brain and spinal cord—these support cells are known as neuroglial or glial cells. These cells perform a variety of functions in maintaining the health of the neurons of the brain. It is estimated that glial cells actually comprise about 90 percent of the cells in the nervous system.
