Why did the kingships end?

The rule of kings ended at separate times for Israel and Judah. The Israel kingship ended around 722 B.C.E., when the Assyrians destroyed their capital city, Samaria, and captured the Israelites. The Judah kingship ended around 586 B.C.E., when the Babylonians destroyed Jerusalem and captured the Israelites there. Some of the reigns of the kings are chronicled in II Kings.
