Amnon was infatuated with his beautiful half-sister, Tamar. He pretended to be ill so that she would come to his house and make him food. When Tamar got to Amnon’s house, he began to force himself on her. She protested and pleaded, “No, my brother, do not force me; for such a thing is not done in Israel; do not do anything so vile! As for me, where could I carry my shame?” (NRSV, II Samuel 13:12) Amnon paid no attention to Tamar’s words. He raped her. After that, he hated her and sent her away. So “Tamar put ashes on her head, and tore the long robe that she was wearing; she put her hand on her head, and went away, crying aloud as she went.” (NRSV, II Samuel 13:19)
