Was David alarmed by this turn of events?

Yes. “David was afraid of the LORD that day; he said, ‘How can I ever bring the Ark of the LORD back into my care?’” (NLT, II Samuel 6:9) So David left the ark at the house of Obed-edom for three months. During that time, God blessed the house of Obed-edom. After that, David took courage and began to transport the ark again.
