The Etruscans were famous in the ancient world for their skill as bronze workers, and Etruscan artists were sought after to make bronze sculptures for the Romans after the Roman conquest of Etruria. Etruscan artists often made small funerary or domestic objects, and were also skilled at making portrait sculpture. One notable example is a portrait bust of a man, likely a dignitary or an ancient hero, from around 300 B.C.E. The man’s eyes, made of painted ivory, communicate a solemn nobility, and the hair and facial features are finely detailed.
