Although most medieval artisans created their work anonymously, the name of one key sculptor is widely known—that of Master Gislebertus, who worked in the first half of the twelfth century. Gislebertus worked on a number of architectural projects throughout medieval France and Burgundy, but is most well known for his contributions to the sculptural decoration of the Cathedral of Saint-Lazare in Autun, France. Graceful, elongated figures and a unique compositional balance characterize his work, which often appeared in tympanums and historiated capitals.
