Modern Art in Latin America

Who was Amelia Peláez?

Amelia Peláez (1896–1968) was an important Cuban artist whose modernist paintings visually explore Cuban identity. Peláez studied art in both Cuba and Paris, where she was inspired by Cubism and Constructivism, especially the work of Russian artist Alexandra Exter. Her paintings are flat and boldly colored, with black outlines, and are reminiscent of the tropical climate of Cuba. During her later career, Peláez worked on ceramics and murals. Examples of her work include Marpacifico (Hibiscus) (1943), Niña con Paloma (Girl with a Dove) (1947), and numerous untitled works and sculptures.
