What is the difference between Theravada Buddhism and Mahayana Buddhism? |
Theravada Buddhism is the earliest form of the religion and is called the Path of the Elders. It is most popular in India, Sri Lanka, and parts of mainland Southeast Asia.
Mahayana Buddhism is the second important school of Buddhism and is known as the Great Path. Mahayana Buddhist worship bodhisattvas, compassionate “Buddhas-to-be” who understand the path to enlightenment and devote themselves to teaching others who to achieve nirvana. Mahayana Buddhism is popular in northern India, China, Japan, Korea, and Nepal.
