The Pyramid of the Sun is an Aztec site from Pre-Classical Mexico, located in Teotihuacan, near modern day Mexico City. With a population of 200,000 people, the city of Teotihuacan reached its peak between 350 and 650 C.E. Similar in size to the Great Pyramid at Giza in Egypt, the Pyramid of the Sun was the most important architectural monument in the city. Aligned with the Avenue of the Dead, the structure was over 200 feet high and 720 feet on each side at the base. Made up of a series of steps, a stairway led to the top where a temple used to sit. The exterior of the building would have been painted, and faced a smaller temple called the Pyramid of the Moon.
