First coined in 1925 by the German art critic Franz Roh, “magic realism” flourished from the 1920s to the 1950s. Magic realism can be described as a realistic approach to fantastical subject matter. Artists most associated with the style include American artists Ivan Albright (1897–1983) and Peter Blume (1906–1992), as well as French artists Paul Delvaux (1897–1994) and René Magritte (1898–1967), who was probably the most famous magic realist painter, but is usually categorized as a Surrealist. The works of these artists are characterized by a sense of mystery juxtaposed with the normalcy of everyday objects.
