Rajasthan, in Northern India, was not part of the Mughal Empire’s vast territory. Instead, it was controlled by Hindu Rajput rulers. Painting traditions in Rajasthan were influenced by Persian and Mughal miniature painting traditions and popular subject matter included images of Hindu gods, such as Krishna, and were often romantic and erotic. In Krishna andRadha in a Pavilion (c. 1760) the Hindu god Krishna, commonly represented with blue skin, is caressing his lover, Radha, while a yellow bolt of lightning overhead symbolizes their sexual attraction.
