Exploring Art on Your Own

Are there any good documentaries about art?

There are literally hundreds, if not thousands, of documentaries about art and artists. One of the best recent documentaries is Simon Schama’s Power of Art (2006) series, which does an excellent (and very entertaining) job of explaining the work of famous artists throughout history—from the Renaissance to the twentieth century. The PBS series art: 21 is unparalleled in its presentation of art in the twenty-first century. Each episode of art: 21, which is organized by theme, provides a look into the minds (and usually the studios) of artists working today. For a mix of Western and nonWestern art, the series Art through Time: A Global View is also presented themati-cally, and includes information from art historians from around the world. It is often shown on local PBS stations. Check your local listings.
