Where are gases actually exchanged in the lungs?

The alveoli are the structures that carry out the vital process of exchanging gases (oxygen and carbon dioxide) between the air and the blood. The tiniest passageways in the lungs are the alveoli. Each pulmonary lobule ends in an alveoli, which are then interconnected with one another. There are approximately 150,000,000 alveoli in each lung.
