The major center of respiratory activity is the medullary respiratory center in the medulla oblongata. It consists of two dorsal respiratory groups and two ventral respiratory groups. The dorsal groups stimulate contraction of the diaphragm and the ventral groups stimulate various groups of muscles. In addition, the pontine respiratory group, located in the pons, functions in switching between inspiration and expiration.
