In a developing embryo pulmonary surfactant is not produced in sufficient quantities until the seventh month of gestation. As the fetus matures, the amount of pulmonary surfactant increases. In premature infants, respiratory distress syndrome (RDS), or hyaline membrane disease, is caused by too little surfactant. This is common, particularly for infants delivered before the seventh month of pregnancy.
