What is pneumonia?

Pneumonia refers to an infection (viral or bacterial) within the lungs. The resulting inflammation from the infection causes fluid accumulation and difficulty breathing. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, there were 61,472 deaths attributed to pneumonia/influenza making them the eighth leading cause of death in the United States in 2004.
