What determines the pitch of the sound produced by the voice?

The pitch of the sound produced depends on the diameter, length, and tension in the vocal cords. The diameter and length are directly related to the size of the larynx. The tension is controlled by the contraction of voluntary muscles associated with various cartilages of the larynx.
