What are the “bends”?

This term actually refers to a condition known as decompression sickness. It occurs when a diver ascends to the surface too quickly after swimming at significant depths. When this happens, the dissolved nitrogen gas in the tissues literally bubbles out of the tissues and into body fluids. The resulting gas bubbles can cause pain in joints, bones, and muscles.
