What are respiratory acidosis and respiratory alkalosis?

Respiratory acidosis results when the respiratory system is unable to eliminate adequate amounts of carbon dioxide, which then accumulates in the circulatory system, causing the pH of the body fluids to drop. Respiratory alkalosis results from hyperventilation, such as might occur in response to stress.
