How is the amount of air moved each minute calculated?

The respiratory minute volume is the amount of air moved each minute. It is calculated by multiplying the respiratory rate (12 breaths per minute on average) by the tidal volume (500 milliters per minute) or 6,000 milliliters (6 liters) per minute.
