How do local anesthetics block the sensation of pain?

Local anesthetics, such as Novocain and lidocaine, reduce the permeability of the membrane to sodium. Nerve impulses cannot pass through the membrane, and so the stimulation of sensory neurons is prevented. Pain signals do not reach the central nervous system.
