When labor does not begin on its own, healthcare providers may induce labor. The most common method of inducing labor is to give the hormone oxytocin. Oxytocin will start contractions and keep them strong and regular. Labor is generally induced when the pregnancy has lasted two weeks beyond the due date or if there is a concern the baby will be too large for safe delivery. Labor may also be induced if the health of the mother becomes endangered.
