Can dialysis be carried out at home?

An alternative to a dialysis machine is continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) in which the patient’s own peritoneal (abdominal cavity) is used as a dialysis membrane. Dialysis fluid is introduced into the peritoneal cavity through a permanently implanted catheter. The fluid then stays in the body for four to six hours, after which it is removed and discarded. While the fluid is in the peritoneum, wastes and ions are exchanged within the capillaries.
